In the Paris Metro, a woman slowly rises on an escalator, carried by the diagonal lines of the architecture. Her gaze turned upwards seems already to be leaving the underground bustle behind. Between shadow, light and white tiles, Subway Girl transforms an everyday gesture into a fragile, silent inner ascent towards a still-invisible, mysterious elsewhere that the image deliberately leaves out of frame.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence accompanies this ascent with suspended delicacy. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s piano moves forward in clear touches, between restraint and melancholy. Its Japanese-inflected sounds create a subtle dialogue with the central figure, while the music transforms the escalator into an inner, secret, almost meditative passage towards the light.
