She walks on with her bags, her face closed as though the street could ask nothing of her. At the entrance, the old man sitting against the wall does not hold out his hand. A black saloon slows down, its engine idling low. She passes in front of him without turning her head, unruffled amid the turmoil of the city.

The track’s two-speed rhythm accompanies the woman alone amid the tumult of Shanghai: one pulse carries the city, the other follows her footsteps. The street ceases to be a backdrop; it becomes the fragile interval in which her story can finally be heard.
