In the Leake Street Tunnel, a woman in uniform emerges from a wall saturated with colour. Orange glasses, a cigarette between her lips, she exudes insolent authority amid the graffiti. Above her, closed eyes nevertheless seem to be watching the scene. Female Cop turns order into provocation, making this painted icon the rebellious heroine of a blazing, dark and electric urban thriller.

The brass, bass and guitar of Shaft move forward with irresistible confidence. Isaac Hayes’s groove gives the character a walk, a voice, almost a story. The mural becomes a film title sequence, and this imaginary policewoman asserts herself as a flamboyant anti-heroine: free, provocative and impossible to look away from.
